Dubai to Khasab Drive: Complete Self-Drive Road Trip Guide
The most detailed guide to driving from the UAE to Musandam, including both border routes.
Why Drive Instead of Taking a Tour?
Driving yourself to Khasab gives you three things a tour doesn't: flexibility, scenic stops, and no rigid schedule. You can leave when you want, stop for photos along the coastal road, and stay as long as you like. The drive itself is half the experience.
The downside: you handle the border crossing yourself and need to arrange car insurance for Oman. But it's straightforward once you know the process.
Route Options: Al Dara vs Dibba
There are two main border crossings into Musandam:
Option 1: Al Dara Border (via Ras Al Khaimah)
- Best for: Travelers from Dubai, Sharjah, or RAK
- Total drive time: ~3 hours from central Dubai
- Border wait: Usually 15-30 minutes
- Road quality: Excellent — paved mountain road to Khasab
Option 2: Dibba Border (via Fujairah)
- Best for: Travelers from Fujairah or eastern Sharjah
- Total drive time: ~2.5 hours from Fujairah
- Border wait: Usually 10-20 minutes
- Road quality: Good but narrower mountain road
Recommendation:From Dubai, take the Al Dara route via RAK. It's faster, the road is wider, and the border crossing is better organized for tourists.
Step-by-Step: Dubai to Khasab via Al Dara
- Dubai → E311 (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road)
Head north from Dubai. Follow signs toward Ras Al Khaimah. - E311 → E611 → RAK Ring Road
Continue on E311 past Sharjah, then take E611 toward RAK. Follow signs for Al Dara / Oman border. The highway is well-signed. - RAK → Al Dara Border (~30 minutes from RAK city)
The road climbs into the Hajar Mountains. This section is scenic — watch for sharp turns and enjoy the views. Drive carefully on the mountain passes. - Al Dara Border Crossing
Park in the designated area. You'll go through UAE exit then Oman entry (see border process below). - Al Dara → Khasab (~45 minutes)
Once through the Omani side, follow the main road to Khasab. It's paved and well-maintained, winding through mountains with views of the coast below.
Drive Time Breakdown
- Dubai to RAK: ~1.5 hours
- RAK to Al Dara border: ~30 minutes
- Border crossing: 15-45 minutes (depending on traffic)
- Al Dara to Khasab: ~45 minutes
- Total: ~3 hours (without border delays)

Border Crossing Process
Here's exactly what happens at Al Dara:
UAE Exit (2-5 minutes)
- Drive to the exit gate
- Hand over passports for stamping (Emirates ID sometimes accepted for UAE nationals)
- Pay the UAE exit fee: ~AED 35 per person
- Drive through to the Oman side (~200 meters)
Oman Entry (10-30 minutes)
- Park in the designated area
- Go to the immigration window with passports
- Get visa on arrival (or show pre-approved e-visa)
- Pay visa fee: ~AED 10-50 per person depending on nationality
- Get vehicle entry permit (show car registration and insurance)
- Collect car registration card back
Documents you need:
- Valid passports for all passengers
- Vehicle registration (original, not copy)
- Oman insurance (purchase before or at border)
- Rental car NOC (if applicable — see our rental car guide)
- Emirates ID (for UAE residents)
Fuel Stations: Plan Ahead
This is critical: fill your tank before leaving RAK. There are no petrol stations between Al Dara border and Khasab. The drive is about 45 minutes through mountains. While you probably won't run out, starting with a full tank removes the stress.
Once in Khasab, there are petrol stations. Fuel in Oman is cheap (similar to UAE prices).
Road Conditions
- E311/E611: Excellent multi-lane highway. No issues.
- RAK to Al Dara: Two-lane paved road through mountains. Well-maintained but with sharp curves. Drive cautiously, especially at night.
- Al Dara to Khasab: Two-lane paved road. Good condition, scenic, with several hairpin turns. Not dangerous but requires attention.
Essential Tips
- Start early. Leave Dubai by 7 AM to arrive in Khasab by 10 AM. This gives you a full day and avoids the worst border traffic.
- Avoid Thursday evening / Friday morning. This is when most UAE residents head to Musandam. The border queue can be long. If possible, leave early Thursday or go on Friday afternoon instead.
- Download offline maps. Cell signal is patchy in the mountains. Google Maps works well offline — download the RAK/Musandam area before you leave.
- Cash is useful. Border fees and some local shops in Khasab prefer cash. ATMs are available in Khasab.
- Carry water and snacks. No shops between RAK and Khasab.
- Check your car insurance.UAE insurance doesn't cover Oman. You need Oman-specific insurance (see our rental car guide if applicable).
What to Do in Khasab When You Arrive
If you arrive in the morning, you have time for:
- Half-day dhow cruise: Departs around 9-10 AM. Dolphins, snorkeling, lunch included.
- Explore Khasab Fort: A 17th-century Portuguese fort in the center of town. Free entry.
- Drive to Khor ash Sham: A 20-minute drive from Khasab to the most dramatic fjord in Musandam.
- Visit the local souq: Small but authentic. Dates, spices, and frankincense.
